Note this was a 58 second exposure at f/11 so a tripod was no doubt used and I’m pretty sure that camera has an articulating LCD viewer and it was probably useful for this.

I’m guessing that those clouds look the way they do because they were moving in the long exposure but I have no idea (I asked him up on flickr, will post his answer when I get it).
Update: Jonne (in comments) and the comment stream up at Flickr clued me in that this is the Aurora borealis. Amazing to see them this color.
