Think Again

Fulton Center Subway Hub, New York City.

This is Gary Sharp shooting up at the rotunda in the center of the Fulton Center Subway Hub. There is another level below the circle that Gary is standing in front of which is an excellent vantage point for shooting the rotunda as well.

It took a while to get a shot with “think again” on the signs which were almost all T-Mobile ads.

While my good friend Gary was visiting over Thanksgiving we did three trips to New York City and I’m backed up with images to process.

I wanted Gary to see the Fulton Center subway hub in lower Manhattan which I’ve photographed before so we spent a few hours there.

These shots were taken under the circular staircase and they catch both the underside of the staircase and the upper structure and rotunda. The shot below catches a bit of reflection on the staircase as well.

The hub is easy to get to on a variety of subways and it’s location is at the heart of all sorts of interesting photo walks in New York: City Hall/Brooklyn Bridge, World Trade Center, Battery Park, Wall Street and much more.

This is yet another shot from under the circular staircase. The right side is a reflection of the rotunda on the glass outer wall of the staircase.

This was shot under the circular staircase which from this angle looks flat. The right side is a reflection of the rotunda on the glass outer wall of the elevator.

This building has numerous levels and I had to use my metro card to get through to the trains and the lower level. This is shooting up at the rotunda through a center opening in the main floor. The arc at the bottom of the opening is the bottom of the circular ramp/staircase. I doubt many people think to look up here, they’re too busy running for their train.

This building has numerous elements: escalators, shiny surfaces that reflect LED displays, the rotunda, and a visible superstructure. Lots to shoot here.

The most striking feature of this building is the huge skylight rotunda on top and on close inspection you can see how the interior “shade” is hung and connected to the building.

This is a reflection off of a set of inner windows in front of me and what’s being reflected is outside a set of outer windows behind me. What I liked about this particular reflection was the faceted windows, giving the reflection a bit of a “cubist” feel.

A few of my contacts who live in New York have shot the Fulton Center subway hub in lower Manhattan and their images really appealed to me.

Here’s the first image I saw of this building and posted here from Andrew Mohrer: Fulton Center Interior. Here’s a two frame panorama from Cornelis Verwaal: A Commuter Vortex.

I love buildings like this so I decided to check it out this past week when we were in New York. I’m glad I did, I took over 200 images with Ricoh GR, Sony RX100 III, and Fuji X100T and I felt like I could have taken many more. There are large, sweeping architectural views here and some great smaller detail as well.

The 24mm wide end of the Sony appealed to me the most for the drama of this building and while I took plenty of shots with the Fuji and the Ricoh, the tighter 28 and 35mm angles of view felt constrained.

Instead of culling the images and posting them all together as a set which has proven difficult for me, I’ll just go through them and post them as I find the good ones. Not my typical process but it will have to do.
