Flower and bokeh

Descanso Gardens, Flintridge, California. There’s something about this garden that’s very nice: lots in bloom, well maintained but not too formal, and plenty of trees to keep it cool and shaded which makes for better photography.

I wanted to see what the Fuji X100S would do wide open and it doesn’t disappoint. Nice circular bokeh (bokeh balls) and great detail and color on flowers. It will be fun to use it for more flower images this summer.

My almost 99 year old mother was tired so I didn’t push her to take her sunglasses off. Her helper, Marta is an amazing woman who has made it possible for my mother to continue living comfortably at home.

I took pictures with the Fuji X100S and the Ricoh GR and this first set is high contrast JPEGs from the GR. I’m slowly getting used to the X100S but at this point the GR is like an extension of my brain as I’ve used it more and its simpler ergonomically.

Flowers and leaves

It was a beautiful day to wheel my mother around these lovely gardens and unlike back home in Connecticut, here flowers were in bloom.

There was plenty of color but I’m very much into monochrome these days. The light on this small clump of flowers was compelling so I wheeled my mother into this little grove and spent ten minutes shooting here.

While the Sony RX100 II makes exceptionally fine images, it’s controls are less than wonderful compared with the Ricoh GR. It’s nice to have a second camera with a zoom lens but I reach for the Ricoh before the Sony most days if for no other reason, it’s easier to use/control.

Concrete stream

Descanso Gardens, Flintridge, California.

It was a beautiful day to wheel my mother around these lovely gardens and unlike back home in Connecticut, here flowers were in bloom. Of course, this particular stream wasn’t exactly Sage’s Ravine; it was lined with concrete, but it still looked great.

There was plenty of color but I’m very much into what the little Ricoh GR is doing with high contrast. These were RAWs that I converted in Lightroom based on what I liked with the Ricoh’s high contrast JPEGs. I continue to love this camera, it’s fun and easy to use and the results are astounding.

Back home in freezing Connecticut now. Sigh.

Shooting flowers at Descanso Gardens

California poppies

Descanso Gardens, La Cañada Flintridge, California. Trying the Sony RX1 out on a group of flowers with a slight breeze. It was cool out so the poppies were closed up but the colors were vivid and there were plenty of unopened buds to shoot. It was tough to get into a group of flowers like this with the RX1’s 35mm lens to get closeups and I longed for my longer macro lenses of years past.

Messing with some wide open, shallow depth of field shots with the RX1. It’s going to take some time to learn to use a 35mm lens to do these kinds of images, I’m used to shooting them at 100mm or longer.

My mother enjoyed these gardens quite a bit. The problem is there are few paved paths and pushing a wheelchair on dirt can be tiring. And, the day we were there it was cool so my mother kept nagging me to hurry up and take my ####ing pictures because she was freezing.

California Poppy Painting

Flintridge, California. I found a cluster of California poppies off the beaten track at Descanso Gardens and did a small series on the variability in this one square yard of flowers.

The various plants in this cluster were either about to bloom or in full bloom and the intense orange color brought to mind Buddhist monks in their robes.
