Bubbles on Union Square

Bubbles on Union Square

Northwest corner of Union Square, New York.

My friend Bill and I were walking back up to Grand Central from the Village (Keste Pizza is incredible) and stumbled into a guy making large soap bubbles.

I don’t think I’ve ever posted this many images at once on Flickr but this man’s energy getting everyone who passed going making bubbles was contagious.

This entire set is only nine minutes of shooting yet the number of people who got into it was amazing. One girl seemed to be the bubble queen; more of her bubbles lived than almost anyone else’s. And, she got two little kids involved which was great to see.

Toward the end Bill got into the action and made some bubbles and the “Bubble Man” made a bubble around him.

I was happy to have the Ricoh GR’s speed for this and learning the timing of when to shoot and what to focus on (a bubble is a fleeting, moving thing) took some practice. I probably should have opened the aperture some more to speed things up but in reflection I’m glad I didn’t as I caught the onlookers in sharp focus which is nice.

I love the energy in this set and it makes me happy to think about how much fun everyone was having.

Note: I’ve never posted this many embedded images in one post on WordPress before so if somehow this gives you problems please let me know in the comments. Thanks.

  1. Super great set of shots and fantastic bubbles! Have you tried out the snap focus system with the GR? I use it quite often especially when I have to be quick and there is no time for focusing. I use snap focus distance of 2 m and apertures between 5.6 to 8.

    1. Jonne, to be truthful, I tried it in the beginning but I didn’t think it was helping me but I can see how it might work here. However, all of these people and bubbles were different distances in front of me so setting something fixed might have been a problem.

Thanks for the feedback, I was pleased with the set.
